Sound Progression is a Cardiff based Black-led charity dedicated to improving the lives of children and young people aged 11 to 24, and particularly those from diverse and socio-economically deprived backgrounds.
We foster emotional wellbeing and self-development by using a shared appreciation of popular and urban music as our primary tool of engagement and create meaningful exchanges that tap into and further harness young people’s interest in music.
Our work is situated at the grassroots level and delivered in well-equipped music studios that are nestled within all seven of Cardiff Youth Services’ established youth clubs in Ely; St Mellons; Llanedeyrn; Butetown; Splott; Llanrumney and the city-centre. Our term-time programme consists of 45, three-hour sessions of youth mentoring a week, supporting approx. 70 young people a week, and is facilitated free of charge to participants by our team of nine music industry professionals.
Our bespoke and tailored sessions include learning how to operate sound desks, production software and recording equipment to rap/songwriting, vocal coaching and performance skills. We offer clear, tangible incentives and rewards such as co-creating original music tracks, producing quality recordings, gaining new skills and accreditations and hosting local community performance and digital events – encouraging young people to take the lead in deciding how this is managed and in what format.
